Vocabulary Learned on the Tour
These are words I had recently learned in class or looked up online in preparation for the trip.
花粉症 かふんしょう Hayfever
As a sufferer of hayfever i thought it was important to explain what the medication I use treated. I also thought it might be handy to know incase I needed to purchase some medication in Japan. 花粉症とは、スギやヒノキなどの植物の花粉が原因となって、くしゃみ・鼻水などのアレルギー症状を起こす病気です。
海洋科学 かいようかがく Marine Science
I currently study marine science at Griffith University and although I learned it in my fisrt year of study, I beleive it will be very useful when explaining to my host family what I am currently study. 今はグリフィス大学で海洋科学と日本語を勉強しています。
お客さん おきゃくさん Guest/Visitor
This was vocabulary learnt in my classes. It is a term that has many meanings including guest, visitor, client and customer. お客さんが来たら、お茶をいれてください。
お湯 おゆ Hot Water
I found this word strange when I learnt it. It means hot water but when Japanese people say to boil water they use お湯 so they are saying boil hot water! お湯を沸かす。
危ない あぶない Dangerous
If I am out and about I want to make sure I don't go anywhere that is dangerous. あそこは危ない から、夜一人で歩かないほうがいいです。
I may need to ask a favor whilst I am away. 兄に買い物を頼みました。
自分で じぶんで (do something) by oneself
On the trip I may not get much time to explore by myself. 自分の時間がぜんぜんないです。
道に迷う みちにまよう To become lost/to lose one's way
I hope I don't get lost anywhere on the trip! フィンランドに行った時、道に迷いました。
ハリネズミ Hedgehog
One of the items on my list was to go to the only Hedgehog cafe in the world. 私はハリネズミカフェに行きたいです。
仏教 ぶっきょう Buddhism
Buddhism is a widely practiced religion throughout Japan. 仏教は日本で普及しています。
These are words that I learnt on during the tour.
神道 しんとう Shintō
Shintō is another religion in Japan. I first learnt about this religion on the tour. When we visited some shintō shrines. 神道の神社はとても綺麗です。
蝶々 ちょうちょう Butterfly
I learnt this word from the assistant tour leader Todd. We were waiting for one of the shows to start at the Edo themepark when he noticed I had a butterfly tattoo on my ankle. あ！蝶々がいる！
オタマジャクシ Ladle/ tadpole
So I learnt this from my host mum one night during dinner. She was explaining what オタマジャクシ meant, and she was saying it stands for the same thing as baby frogs (tadpoles)! I guess you could say they are a similar shape, with an oval main body and a tail extending from it. 私は池に多くのオタマジャクシを見ました。
別々 べつべつ Seperately
This was a word we used frequently in restuarants. Essentially it is a way of asking if the bill can be seperated or if we have to pay it all together. 別々に払いますか？
平和 へいわ Peace
I learnt this vocabulary whilst in Hiroshima. Peace is a key message that the city promotes to visitors in the city. 相互理解は平和を促進する。
ご注意ください ごちゅういください Please be careful
Everytime I caught a train I would here an announcement reminding everyone to "Mind the Gap". 足元に、ご注意ください。
女形 おながた Female impersonator
This word is used to describe male actors who play female roles in traditional Japanese kabuki perfomaces. 私はショーで女形を見ました。
舞妓 まいこ Dancing Child
I actually learnt this when I was looking up geisha after seeing one in Kyoto, To my suprise I had actually seen a 舞妓 or apprentice geisha. The way to tell is from the hairpeice and shoes she had on. 舞妓 wear more lavoush hairpeices and their shoes are often very high. ことは、舞妓でしたか？
計画 けいかく Plan
On my days off, I would plan what i wanted to do. Even if I did plan too many activities. あなたの計画にはついていけない。
Quite often in Japan we would see students going to school on weekends and in the evening. Many were going to cram school. だから学生は塾に行きます。
